Electrical Safety Presentations
Teaching about the dangers of electricity and how to stay safe around electricity is a top priority at West Central Electric Cooperative. Therefore, we offer several safety programs and demonstrations appropriate for all ages from preschool children to adults.
We can come and talk to your class, organization meeting or place of employment!
We can tailor our safety programs to any age or group, with a variety of topics, videos and a real-life electrical safety display which physically demonstrates the things electricity can do. We also have a variety of youth safety programs that we will bring to your school classroom, group or organization meeting.
Preschool and Kindergarten
Students will hear a story titled “Cat and Duck Electric Safety,” that follows Duck and his friend, Cat, as they use the Anywhere and Everywhere Machine to jump inside a book. Cat and Duck encounter several electrical safety dangers and learn how to stay safe. Listeners are asked to help out by yelling “STOP!” to a person putting something besides a plug into an outlet, and blow a kite away from a power line. Basic electric safety (around outlets, plugs, padmount transformers, power lines, etc.) is discussed.
Elementary School
Students will hear a story about an electric lineman “Flat Stanley” style, and receive a sticker sheet about linemen and the gear they wear and use. They can “dress” and color the line worker. Also available is a “Flat Larry” or “Flat Katie” line worker students can color and take on a Flat Stanley-type of adventure. Basic electric safety (around outlets, plugs, substations & pad mount transformers; flying kites; downed power lines etc. is discussed. (Aimed at grades 1-3, adjusted for grade levels)
Upper elementary-school-age children (aimed at grades 4-5) will see a presentation titled, “How does electricity happen?” This presentation teaches students what electricity is, how it is produced and how it gets to their homes, churches, stores and schools. Also available is a real-life safety display, Power Town, which physically demonstrates the things electricity can do and stresses electrical safety.
Middle and High School
Middle and high school students will see a real-life safety display, Power Town, which physically demonstrates the things electricity can do and stresses electrical safety.
STEM/STEAM Events
A hands-on demo that allows students to see and touch a section of a power pole with a crossarm and wire including insulators, clamps that hold the wire, and a cutout they can try their hand at installing with a hot stick. Kids can try on the lineman’s gear and try a variety of tasks while wearing gloves, sleeves, a hardhat and safety glasses.
Community Groups
From 4-H groups to senior citizens’ groups such as AARP, we can create a program for your meeting that will both entertain and inform. Electrical safety, Power Town, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, etc. are a few of the topics available.
On-the-Job
We will come to your business and present a safety program related to your employees and the electrical safety issues thy may face in the workplace or on the job site. Topics include electrical safety in the work place, contractor safety, electrical safety for fire departments, farm and ranch electrical safety and more.
